Convenient Consumption
In case you missed it, footy (the AFL kind), returned last night. It’s not all that long ago you’d get your footy fix from tuning into the radio on a Saturday afternoon and reading the back page of the paper on a Sunday morning. Back then many of the games weren’t televised and you were lucky to catch a 30 second grab on the news. These days however, footy is everywhere…and it’s big business. The TV rights alone for the AFL are in excess of a billion dollars over 5 years!
But it’s not only television. If you can’t get to the ground or to a TV to watch your team, there’s a multitude of other options available. Aside from ‘old media’ options like the radio, you can watch the game online, listen to an audio stream on your laptop, be kept up-to-date with every score and statistic on a smartphone app, or even watch live (via subscription) on your phone or tablet! Additionally, when the game is over there’s the seemingly endless hours of analysis that takes place. The game will be written about, talked about and completely dissected for days to come. And with online forums, blogs and Twitter you can join in with the players, commentators and fans alike to debate, scrutinise…even gloat.
It’s not just footy either – the commercial television networks have their own media platforms for you to discuss your favourite shows and catch up on the ones you missed during the week – there’s FANGO (Seven), tenplay (Ten) and Jump-in (Nine), along with the ABC’s iview. Media has changed, forever. To stay relevant, it’s important your business explores its new media options too. A blog or a Facebook page could dramatically improve your customer feedback – not to mention SEO. Setting up a Twitter account to drive people towards your latest product or special offer might be the best solution for you. Or it might be as simple as having a mobile-friendly website that can clearly and easily be viewed by anyone, anywhere, whether they’re sitting on the couch or on the train home from work.

Decade of Dominance
This week the social networking mega-brand known as Facebook, turned 10 years old. When it launched in the US in 2004 (before expanding worldwide in 2005), Google was yet to release either Gmail or Google Maps and the 1st generation Apple iPhone was still 3 years away! No one could have predicted the meteoric rise of these three companies into global tech giants, and how they would forever change the world.
Since 2004, Google has expanded to far more than just a search engine. They now produce their own netbooks; web browser Chrome, smartphone operating system Android, has introduced us to Google Street View, launched products like Google Glass and has most recently been buying up robotics companies as if robots are going out of fashion coming into fashion.
Likewise, Apple has gone from strength to strength, building off their success with the Mac and the iPod, introducing the world to the first genuine smartphone, the iPhone. These days Apple shares the smartphone landscape with companies like Samsung, producing phones which allow us to do almost anything we can do on a personal computer, only it fits in our back pocket.
And lastly, there is Facebook. Now with over 1.2 billion users worldwide, more than half of whom log on each and every day, it is the social media powerhouse and has revolutionised the way we interact, and the way we do business. Lead by Facebook, social media itself has become so much more than just young people connecting with their friends, it is an integral part of business marketing – if your business isn’t on Facebook, you’re a step behind. And if you’re not being searched on Facebook, chances are you’re being Googled on a smartphone, so hopefully your website’s up to the task. The internet, hey – never before has such a large audience of potential clients been in one spot.
